Types of Dahlia

Types of Dahlia

Dahlias are popular herbaceous perennial plants. They come in a vivid range of colors and shapes. They are the most loved garden plants as well as cut flowers.

There are different types of Dahlia based on flower types.

1. Single Dahlias

Single dahlia bear flowers with a single layer of petals arranged in a flat or slightly cuplike shape, uniformly overlapping each other, usually in the same direction without any gaps.

2. Anemone-Flowered Dahlias

Anemones feature an outer ring of small, flat petals arranged in a circle and surrounded by clusters of tiny, elongated disc florets which form an interesting flower shape.

3. Collarette dahlias

Collarette dahlia flowers have a very specific structure. The blooms are flat with a small inner ring of frilled petals and an outer row of standard petals.

4. Waterlily Dahlias

Waterlilies have fully double flowers with broad and usually sparse rays. These rays are straight or slightly curved along their length, giving the flowers a shallow appearance.

5. Decorative Dahlias

Decorative Dahlias are double flowers with wide, flat-tipped petals that may be slightly wavy. These flowers are larger.

Ball dahlias have a flattened top, with blunt or rounded petals arranged in a spiral pattern giving the flower a spherical shape. They have an incredibly perfect arrangement of petals.

7. Cactus Dahlias

Dahlia flowers have long, thin petals that usually curve inward. They vary in size from small to large.

Peony dahlias have daisy-like petals around a prominent center. They have an open center with two or more rows of petals.

Individual ray florets of these Dahlias, no matter their shape, always have notches or are split into evenly spaced parts at the tip giving them a fringed appearance.
