Nasturtium is a beautiful plant with colorful and fragrant flowers. They have many medicinal properties too. These plants can be grown in containers very easily. The flowers of these plants can add a dash of color to your indoors.
Botanical Name: Tropaeolum majus
Propagation
Nasturtium plants come in many different varieties including bushy, trailing, climbing, and even self-seeding. All nasturtium can easily be propagated by seeds. Nasturtium is a low-maintenance plant and you don't need to take special care for the seeds to germinate.
Choosing the container
If you want to grow nasturtium, the ideal pot size is between 10-12 inches. They're also good for growing in hanging baskets.
Location
Nasturtium plants need direct sunshine for good growth. While growing outdoors keep them away from harsh bright light. Indoors, keep them near an east-facing window. They can grow best when planted in a place that receives plenty of morning light.
Soil
It's best to grow these plants in loose, well-drained soils. These plants can thrive in poor soil too.
To get the most out of container plants, you can add fertilizer to the potting soil.
Watering
Water nasturtium only when the soil dries out. You can test this by scratching off the top layer of soil with your fingers. Watering the plant once per week is enough. During the summer months, you may need to water the plants two times per week. Don’t water the plant at night because mold may develop if the soil stays wet for too long.
Pests and Diseases
Nasturtium attracts numerous insects. Dead leaf litter provides shelter for harmful insects.
If you're having trouble with ants, aphids, or any other pest, spraying the plants with pressure water will help remove them quickly. Spraying neem oil mixed with water can also be effective.
Deadheading
Deadheading is removing dead and dried leaves and flowers. It encourages new growth and good flowering.
Harvesting
Nasturtium is an edible plant. The leaves have a peppery taste, whilst the flowers have a little sweetness and spicy taste. They can be used in teas and salads.
