Agave is a succulent perennial. They are hardy plants and withstand harsh sun, high heat, and drought conditions. 1. Foxtail Agave Botanical Name:Agave attenuata With their silvery green leaves, foxtails look elegant. The leaves form a rosette at the center that looks like a fox's tail. Hence it is called Foxtail Agave. Unlike other agave species, they lack sharp pointy, or spiny ends. 2. Caribbean Agave Botanical Name:Agave angustifolia Caribbean agave leaves grow up to 2 feet. They are pale green with a creamy margin. The leaves form a dense rosette, and flower bloom on a 10 feet tall spike. 3. Blue Agave Botanical Name:Agave tequilana Tequila comes from the blue agave plant, which gives it its name. It grows up to seven feet tall and has greenish-blue leaves. They also bear yellow blooms. 4. American Century Agave Botanical Name:Agaveamericana The American Century flower has beautiful, bright bluish-green leaves and spikes at the tips. It also attracts hummingbirds. 5. Whale's Tongue Agave Botanical Name:Agave ovatifolia It is a cold hard agave. This agave has thick cupped leaves that are light blue. The flowering spike reaches a height of 14 feet, and the plant takes around ten years to produce flowers. 6. Octopus Agave Botanical Name:Agave vilmoriniana It is a beautiful addition to any garden or container, with its uniquely shaped leaves. But, it is known to take up to ten years before bearing its magnificent yellow blooms. 7. Queen Victoria Agave Botanical Name:Agave victoriae It is one of the most beautiful varieties of agave with dark green leaves. It produces flowers once in a lifetime. 8. Thread-Leaf Agave Botanical Name:Agave filifera They form a beautiful rosette which gives it an ornamental look. The buds on the leaves bear white thread, hence the name. 9. Shaw's Agave Botanical Name:Agave shawii This evergreen perennial has gray pointy edges. It can grow up to 3 ft tall. The gray spine under sunlight exhibits shades of red, gold, and pink. 10. Twin-Flowered Agave Botanical Name:Agave geminiflora It is a rare type of agave from Mexico's west coast. They grow slowly, reach a height of about 2 ft and 3 ft wide, and produce green-yellow flowers in groups of two. 11. Mountain Agave Botanical Name:Agave montana It takes ten years for giant asparagus-like shoots to grow and produce flowers. The spike reaches a height of 12 feet. 12. Ferocious Giant Agave Botanical Name:Agave salmiana ferox The rigid and sturdy leaves grow broader over time. It reaches up to 11 feet tall. The canary yellow flower grows on long spikes.
